Invoice details for a self-employed sole trader

Show who is trading

Include your own name and any business name you use. If you use a trading name, include an address where legal documents can be delivered to you.

Make the work easy to verify

Describe the service, period or product clearly. Contractors and consultants can charge by hour, day, session or fixed fee and add separate lines where the work has different rates.

Keep invoice numbers organised

Give every invoice a unique number and use a consistent sequence. Retain the invoice with your other business records after sending it to the customer.

Common questions

Do I need a company number?

No. A sole trader is not a limited company. Select Sole trader in the generator and the company-number field is removed.

Should I put my UTR on an invoice?

A standard customer invoice does not generally need to display your Unique Taxpayer Reference. Keep sensitive tax identifiers private unless a legitimate process specifically requires them.
